Do we need another book about sales?
How exciting and useful can another book on sales be? There are already a million books on sales – not another one! So I asked ten people I could count on for ‘the truth’ to read it. The responses were:
I didn’t expect to laugh a little and I actually learned a lot!
This stuff is useful Tiz – it’s not all theory or process.
I'm not in sales and never had much regard for it. Now I feel like I understand it. I have a new found respect for it.
Finally! I've been waiting for a book like this. I'm a salesperson and this confirms so much of what I've been feeling and observing. Thank you!
It took many re-writes. My first draft was so raw and gritty that one person I allowed to read it said to me ‘ugh – how do I tell you your baby is ugly?’ The good news is that even ugly ducklings grow into their beauty. I believe we all need to just write like hell. Let the thoughts flow out of our heads and onto paper. Then, start chiseling and polishing away to reveal the masterpiece.
But writing a book on sales wasn’t intentional – at least not at first. In setting up my own sales consulting firm after leaving the big corporate world as Head of Sales, I immersed myself in further learning, reading and research. At the same time I was writing with the intention of launching my tizTALKS blog site. Then one day waking up rather early in the morning, I realized how valuable a book written by someone that’s been in the trenches and led the troops could be. I recalled back to the time when I heard a speaker who was a top sales professional in big business doing a talk on sales and sharing his experiences. He didn’t need a script. It was his life and he had me riveted on the edge of my seat. Out of all the professional books on sales I’ve read, the speakers I’ve listened to, the training from sales facilitators I’ve received, I am grateful to them all - but no one has the same impact as the guy who gave that sales talk to a group of salespeople. It was like he was reading my mail. He was one of us. He wasn't just pontificating like so many platform speakers. He was the real deal. And that’s when I knew.
That morning was my epiphany. The clouds parted and a bright sun beamed right at me blinding me and a voice that said “you must write a book about sales.” Ok so that didn’t quite happen but the thought was compelling enough that I then spent the entire afternoon in the business section of Indigo bookstore and going through all the available books on sales out there and what their specific subject matter was. But what about a book from a real life sales person about what’s going on in the world right now and where it's headed? I couldn’t find that one. There was an empty spot on the shelf for a book like that. That morning I connected the dots – and got to work.
I hope you buy my book. I hope it helps.
