It's the Home Stretch to Your 2018 Goals. The Time is Now.

It’s here. 4th Quarter. The last segment of the year. I'm taking a serious look at all those goals I had set out for myself at the beginning of the year and doing some final reassessing. This is the time I decide what’s most important to double down my efforts on because the sunset of yet another year has already begun. It’s been a very productive year for me so far. Published a book about sales in fast changing technology times, launched my website tizTALKS.ca, and achieved a few important personal goals. Yet there is still some things I want to accomplish before this particular year is out.
I look back only to see how far I’ve come – then I have to turn around quickly.
I currently consult and teach on the subject of B2B sales and based on my experience, the best strategy to ensure you achieve your yearly sales goals is to start the year right off with pistols blazing. A strong January leads to a strong first quarter, giving you a running head start to slam dunk the rest of the year. This might sound almost obvious and simplistic yet it's rather unsettling how the corporate environment tends to whittle away January still tinkering with plans and metrics for the new year. Sure, it’s important to have the previous year-end properly tied up to set new ones, but at the start of a new year many sellers are either flying without a map or aren’t even in the gate yet because they’re still wrapped up in the previous year. What a waste of fresh new start. Then October rolls around and many wonder how the heck they're going to achieve their goals. Time waits for no one and I will always maintain the best time to achieve your goals...any kind of goals is to start right now.
This is also true of our personal lives. How often do we set a goal only to allow the busy-ness of life to distract and even derail us? Or perhaps we spend too much time dwelling on those doors that closed that we fail to see the opening doors in front us. We can waste too much of each day to thoughts of yesterday and things that really don’t matter in the grand scheme of our lives. ‘Now’ is all we really can impact. I would hate to calculate just how many NOW's I've wasted in my life. For what? I can't even tell you! Fear perhaps...but what a lame excuse that is. But let me tell you, once you get a taste of the pay-offs when you take advantage of every today....there is nothing you can't do. It's exhiliirating and gives you such a sense of accomplishment.
When you can impact one moment after another, you’ll discover the true magic and momentum of compounding. Suddenly, without warning, all those daily little steps catapult you forward.
So, as I reflect a little at this first week of October, I can decide to take those remaining 'moments' to the end of the year and do something with it. I’ve checked off everything I’ve achieved so far and re-prioritizing all the things I haven’t. Today, I’m giving all my time and focus to the stuff that matters most to my success and my personal wellbeing. I have to continually remind myself to consciously grab hold of the currency of today. I have a note on my desk that says ‘What next right move can I make?’ And every night I write down 3-5 things that went right that day because I want more of that tomorrow.
In business, it's time to get ruthless with time. There's a hard stop on December 31st people! Now's the time to go for your highest returns. In our personal lives let today be the day to reaffirm and advance something important to us so we can look back on the year as we sing Auld Lang Syne and be grateful we started when we did. If we don’t put ourselves at the top of our own list and make TIME right NO for our personal goals and desires...who...else...will?
The time is NOW folks. Well...actually...NOW is always the time but you get the message. Start NOW while there's still time in 2018 so you can say 2018 was a GREAT YEAR! Focus on what you CAN DO right now however small. Do it again tomorrow. That's how you start. As I always say - get it off your list and into your life. Tackle that thing, that challenge whatever it is. Looking back…you’ll be so damn proud of yourself.
I love October. Somehow as the leaves turn those glorious bold shades of color I'm inspired to let go of yesterday and all the things I didn't do - and be a little bolder to do something today.
“October is the fallen leaf, but it is also a wider horizon more clearly seen. It is the distant hills once more in sight, and the enduring constellations above them once again.” ~Hal Borland
