I'm a Paid Published Author...Thank YOU Amazon
Posted on Sep 28, 2018
Let’s face it - writing a book and publishing a book are not the same thing. Getting paid is a whole other realm.
Well, hats off to Amazon. I can officially say I’m not only a writer, but a published author and a paid one at that thanks to Amazon KDP. Thank you. Merci. Gracias. Danke and gratitude in every other language.
I was in the midst of a major career transition having spent many years in corporate sales leadership roles. I didn’t want to confine my future work to the industry I had just come from, however in setting up my own businesss, I did want to continue promoting my skills as a Sales expert to the B2B world. I needed something that I could use as a calling card for other industries and people who don't know of me or my capabilities that would give me credibility. It was clear I not only needed my own website but I needed to write a book. I had always wanted to write a book - not necessarily about sales mind you. Many have the same dream of one day writing that epic novel. It didn't occur to me that writing a tactical business book on what I know best was in my immediate reach and could be a big feather in my cap. Not so long ago, publishing any kind of book would have been an enormous undertaking and frankly a real long shot. Today, all it took was some web searches, a quick tutorial on Amazon's publishing platform, and it was all 'systems go'. For free.
My experience with Amazon KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) was and is nothing short of fantastic.
Amazon KDP gives you all the guidance and tools you need to set-up, format, write, upload, design, set prices, select markets, languages, marketing tools and a whole lot more. They take all the financial stuff like exchange rates and various country taxes off your plate and literally does it for you. What’s mind-blowing is once I upload my manuscript and hit 'publish', I am, within a short period of time, available and selling in most parts of the world! In the past, you’d have to literally print hundreds of thousands of books and then ship those heavy suckers all over the world. It was expensive and risky. Let's be real - that only ever happened to the best of the best authors with high flootin' agents that were backed by major publishing firms. Now, it’s a DIY click of a mouse. A customer can receive an e-version/ Kindle book within seconds no matter where you are. If you don't sell any...well...no harm done - well except maybe a bit of a bruised ego.
But the real miracle is in the actual printed book and the ability to order JUST ONE of my books. Amazon will literally 'print to order' from a location nearest you and ship it. Talk about being able to take full advantage of Amazon’s incredible economies of scale! Plus, that one printed book on Prime ships free. What’s in it for Amazon? They get a piece of the profits. Hey it’s only fair. In fact, it’s more than a fair deal – it’s an AMAZING one. Honestly, I have no idea how Amazon does it all so well and so seamlessly. To me, it’s magic.
And then Amazon paid me...
You can imagine how pumped I was to receive an email notification from Amazon of my incoming first Royalty direct deposit. After all my hard work, I can legitimately claim the title of PAID Author! Never mind that my first royalty payment was for a whopping $9.44 USD – somehow, somewhere, someone or two or three have bought my book! That was enough for me to get behind this book a little more and get a marketing plan in place.
What’s really cool is I can update my book and re-publish it faster than I can cook a midweek dinner as often as I like. I can even change the cover. I can keep it fresh and relevant or I can take the whole thing down and ‘unpublish it’. In fact, I love Amazon KDP so much, I’m now considering creating an Audible version. Yep, and audio version too What's next? That epic novel perhaps...
I can't thank Jeff Bezos and the team at Amazon KDP enough. Years ago this would have remained a pipe dream. See, I have always been a writer most of my life. I have written books, lyrics, poems, articles and countless journals that was eventually used to help stoke a fire. To have my words go from 'kindling to Kindle'...and be a published and paid author too...well, that's really big in my books - no pun intended. Ok maybe it was intended. Amazon gave me the means and made it a reality. All I had to do was keep my written works safe from open flames and muster up the confidence and courage to put myself out there.
My awesomeness, as is yours, is in the doing.
When I tell others that I wrote a book and published it, their immediate response is ‘Oh I’ve always wanted to write a book!’
Well, take it from me - there's nothing stopping anyone anymore. Seriously....Write the book. Then publish the damn thing. It won't cost you a cent.
In the Acknowledgement page of my published book, The Business of Sales, I thank Amazon for giving writers like myself a chance. Pretty.Darn.Cool.
